Your Skincare Routine, According to Your Skin Type

“Never underestimate the importance of looking after your skin!” That’s what we’ve all been told, right?! But did you know, your skin type can have a huge impact on what products you need in order to keep a youthful, healthy, glowing complexion? Here are the routine basics for all skin types you can follow…

Normal Skin:

You guys are the lucky ones! Not prone to breakouts or dry patches, your skin can withstand most products thrown at it. But if you want to stick to a routine which will benefit your complexion, try this…

AM – Cleanser, Toner, Moisturizer with SPF. The three staples to remove make-up, cleanse and hydrate, but with an added protective kick from the SPF. Even in the winter, we can obtain skin damage from too much sun exposure.

PM – Cleanser, Toner, Antioxidant Serum, Moisturizer. The antioxidant serum will cleanse and protect the skin from free-radicals and other pollution you may be exposed to during the day.

Extras – Glycolic Acid Serum. This added bonus can help fine lines, acne, blackheads, dullness, oiliness and uneven texture. A useful addition to a basic skincare routine.

Combination Skin:

Combination skin can be oily in some areas (especially the nose, forehead and chin) but dry in other areas (i.e. the cheeks or neck). Combination skin needs an oil-balancing routine which moisturizes but doesn’t over-saturate.

AM – Cleansing Gel, Toner, Lightweight Moisturizer, Zinc Oxide Sunscreen. You want to make sure the moisturizer is lightweight so it doesn’t add to any unwanted oil on the skin, but hydrates enough to keep those dry patches under control. The Zinc Oxide sunscreen will contain less oil, too, and the zinc will help any redness or inflamed blemishes on the skin.

PM – Cleansing Gel, Toner, AHA/BHA Serum, Lightweight Moisturizer. AHA/BHA gently exfoliate away dull, dead skin and aid discolorations over time, as well as unclog pores.

Extras – Clay Mask, Face Oil. The clay mask will balance the natural levels of your skin to even out the oily and dry areas in a non-abrasive manner.

Oily Skin:

Oily skin will be more prone to breakouts and acne, and may have visible excess oil on the skin’s surface. Your routine needs to be oil balancing, but not dehydrating, with specific care in reducing spots/blemishes.

AM – Cleansing Gel, Toner, Antioxidant Serum, Zinc Oxide Sunscreen. Similar to combination skin, using a cleansing gel rather than lotion will reduce the amount of oil added to the skin. The zinc and antioxidant serum will help balance any redness or breakout areas.

PM – Cleansing Gel, Toner, AHA/BHA Serum, Retinol Serum, Oil-Free Moisturizer. The oil-free moisturiser is a no-brainer, but retinol serum may be new to some people. It stimulates the production of new cells, helping with anti-aging, breakouts, uneven skin-tone and inflammation.

Extras – Clay Mask. Purifies and helps clear pores of excess oil.

Dry Skin:

Dry skin cries out for moisture. It will drink up as much lotion as you apply, and may still flake after a whole day of make-up wear. You need a routine that will lock moisture in, and encourage the production of your skin’s natural oils.

AM – Cleansing Lotion, Toner, Antioxidant Serum, Hydrating Moisturizer with SPF. You want to make sure your moisturizer is extremely hydrating, giving your skin the most moisture possible.

PM – Cleansing Lotion, Toner, Retinol Serum, Eye Cream, Hydrating Moisturizer. An eye cream is key for dry skin as this area will tighten the most, the retinol serum will also stimulate new skin cell growth.

Extras – At-Home Peel, Face Oil. An at-home peel will help encourage the production of new skin and the natural oils that come with it. It will keep your complexion nourished and supple.

Sensitive Skin:

Owners of sensitive skin need to be mindful of what ingredients are put on their face, and stick to natural, soothing alternatives without harsh scents or alcohols.

AM – Cleansing Lotion, Alcohol-Free Toner, Scent-Free Moisturizer, Zinc Oxide Sunscreen. Making sure your products are alcohol and fragrance free is key.

PM – Cleansing Lotion, Alcohol-Free Toner, Scent-Free Moisturizer.

Extras – Gel Mask, Lactic Acid Serum. The gel mask will cool and sooth any skin irritations at the end of the day.

Aging Skin:

Aging skin needs to use specific products that fight the signs of wrinkles and discoloration, as well as looking to brighten and lift the skin’s appearance. Specific eye creams are a must, as the skin around your eyes is the thinnest, so will be the first to show signs of aging.

AM – Cleansing Lotion, Alcohol-Free Toner, Antioxidant Serum, Moisturizer with SPF.

PM – Cleansing Lotion, Natural Exfoliator, Toner, Retinol Serum, Eye Cream, Hydrating Moisturizer. The natural exfoliatior will encourage the production of bright, new skin, while the retinol and eye cream can target specific areas where aging may occur first.

Extras – At-Home Peel, Brightening Serum, Face Oil. A brightening serum will help restore youthful and glowing skin.
